Tummy Got You Down?

There used to be a time when women who gave birth viewed their stomachs afterwards and concluded there is nothing they could do about the residual skin and stretch marks. Similarly, women (and men) who lost weight and ended up with loose skin and stretched abdominal muscles had the same problem. Last year, however,  more than 150,000 American women and men had abdominoplasty surgery. 95% of those who had it said it was “worth it”, according to realself.com,  Abdominoplasty is also known as a tummy tuck. It is not an “instant fix” or replacement for weight loss. It is important to lose the weight first.  You should be in good health before having any surgery. The more weight you lose, the trimmer you will look. It's important after surgery to have a good dietary regimen in order to control your weight. It is common to think  you’ll be bedridden recovery for days after surgery. But, as a plastic surgeon, I recommend getting up the day after surgery to promote circulation. This encourages the area to receive much needed blood to promote healing. This also helps you feel better after surgery and gets you back on your feet. Within six weeks, most patients are able to do cardiovascular exercises like running and elliptical machine exercise. Caution: weight-lifting requires too much exertion and could strain the sutures and incisions. If you’re unsure of whether or not a tummy tuck is right for you, look at before-and-after photos either on my  website or on a patient education site like www.surgery.org. Tummy tuck photos can show you pictures of individuals who might have a similar body type and their results after surgery. Of course, the most important patient safety tip is: see a board-certified plastic surgeon.

A NEW LOOK AT TUMMY TUCKS

The evidence is everywhere.  

America is rapidly becoming The Land of the Obese.  

More and more patients have having bariatric procedures done to lose weight, and I mean a lot of weight, ie, 80, 90 or 100 pounds and more.  More than 200,000 bariatric or weight loss surgeries are performed every year. 

With such massive weight loss, body contouring becomes a top priority and, in some cases, a necessity due to skin rashes and body odor from perspiration trapped under the folds of skin.  As a result, a standard tummy tuck (that is,  an incision across the lower abdomen) may not be enough.  

So one may do a “fleur-de-lis technique.”  This is the same, but it also includes a vertical incision to help get at excess skin vertically as well as horizontally.  The procedure is done, after the bariatric surgery, as an outpatient.

I recently read where an employee of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention got caught stealing from the agency to have $10,000 worth of liposuction performed.  

Ms. Jamilah Franklin also wrote $15,000 in “convenience” checks for herself and friends for various things such as rent.  She was placed on 3 years probation and ordered to repay $25,177.00 in restitution.  She now is a “former” employee.  

With all the new enrollees in the food stamp program, more fraud is occurring.  I had a phone call from a lady who wanted to pay for her tummy tuck in Fort Myers with food stamp vouchers!  Unfortunately the bigger government gets, the more opportunities for waste, fraud and corruption.

WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY - News from Dr. Brueck

Another term used for weight loss surgery is bariatric surgery. Once someone loses 70lbs, 100lbs or more than 200 lbs they are left with a lot of excess skin. The areas affected by this excess skin may be abdomen, thighs, arms and face.

A recent survey was taken of 425 bariatric surgery patients with 252 patients responding. 74% of respondents wanted some type of body contouring operation. 53 patients (21%) underwent a total of 61 contouring procedures. In my practice, many of my patients will undergo more than one body contouring procedures at one time. For example, a patient may undergo a tummy tuck and a breast lift at the same time.

This survey found the #2 requested procedure was a tummy tuck or abdominoplasty, followed by thigh lifts. In my experience, tummy tuck is #1 followed by some type of breast surgery and suction lipectomy of other areas. There is no question this is a growing area of cosmetic surgery.
