MEASURING TROPONIN T - An important indicator
Troponin
T is a protein molecule that binds to tropomyosin. It is measured in
patients who have heart attacks-the higher the level the more damage to the
heart.
A
new study in JAMA(Journal of American Medical Association) showed that
measuring troponin T levels after NON cardiac surgery may show which patients
are at a high risk of dying with the first month of their surgery.
So the
study concluded that perhaps measuring troponin T after one’s surgery may be a
tip off that there may be cardiac damage and the patient needs to be monitored
more carefully or further studies may be needed.
As a Fort Myers plastic surgeon, I find this encouraging news.
