Eyelash treatment steps up to bat(t)

At long last, the long awaited miracle drug for thicker, longer eyelashes has received FDA approval. The new miracle drug will be marketed as Latisse.

Allergan developed the drug to use in treating glaucoma, but one of its side effects was longer, fuller eyelashes. The glaucoma drug is Lumigan, which is technically called bimatoprost.

The turf battles will soon be coming. Allergan hopes to begin marketing its new Latisse some time in February.

The cost will be $120 for a 30-day supply for both eyes. The liquid is applied daily to the base of the upper eyelashes. The results can become apparent in as little as eight weeks and should show complete results by 16 weeks.

Eyelashes will gradually return to their prior appearance if treatment is not maintained.

Just something new to add to your cosmetics bag.

Longer eyelashes - News from Dr Robert Brueck, Fort Myers Board Certified cosmetic surgeon

Remember a while back, we wrote about the quest for longer eyelashes and some potentially new and exciting developments?

There now are some definitive studies to show its effectiveness. The drug in question is Allergan’s Lumigan, also known as bimatoprest. The drug currently is FDA-approved for the treatment of glaucoma.

In a double blind study, patients received a placebo (or nothing, i.e. water drops) in one eye and Lumigan in the other.

The results?

The eye receiving Lumigan had eyelashes grow two millimeters in six weeks, or twice as quickly as the eye receiving the placebo.

Allergan also warns that the drops may cause the iris to become darker.

So if you want longer lashes and darker irises, this is the ”holy grail.” You will, however, have to wait for FDA approval for this use, which is anticipated for 2009.

The only question I have is, “How do you measure eyelash length?”

Longer eyelashes will soon be here

A while ago I wrote about a new medical drug to produce darker, thicker, longer eyelashes.

Allergan, the maker of Botox, hopes to launch this new cosmetic drug next summer. The active ingredient is bimatoprost, which is Allergan’s glaucoma drug, Lumigen.

David Pyott, Chairman of Allergan, feels sales from this product could exceed $500 million. There will be a lot of long lashes.

The drug will be applied in much the same way as a woman applies eyeliner. Allegan recently filed a lawsuit against Jan Marini Skin Research for infringing on Allergan’s patent rights to the use of prostaglandins to enhance eyelash growth.

Jan Marini took their product off the market but in response they said they are coming out with an eyelash enhancer that is “non-prostaglandin” and works as well or better than Allergan’s.

Let the battle begin.

Longer Eyelashes

Remember a short time ago we talked about a glaucoma drug that had as one of its side effects the growth of longer eyelashes?

The glaucoma drug is Humigen, the patent for which is owned by Allergen.

Allergen has sued seven eyelash product companies for patent infringement.

One of those companies is Jan Marini Skin Research. Jan Marini has decided to take its product off the market. The battles go on in the multi-billion dollar anti-aging, non-surgical cosmetic business!

More to come.
